    This picture reminds me of the original Erie Canal here in New York State, parts of which still exist. (It's been widened and rebuilt a couple of times). The Erie Canal was built for different reasons than your canal but both canals support a lot of recreation.

      I was going to buy gas at Sam's Club and noticed these New Trier students rowing in the Evanston canal.

    Cool photo. I had never heard of the Evanston Canal so I googled it and it has an interesting history and has been there a long time.
